First flight on bio kerosene

On November 23, 2009 for the first time in history a flight with passengers on board , driven by bio kerosene, has left Amstelveen. This world premiere is for the Dutch company KLM, and the Dutch minister of economy, Maria van der Hoeven, was among its passengers.

At 2:15 p.m. the Boeing 747 has departed. The motor functioned  on a mix of Carmeline bio fuel and fossile kerosene. Carmeline is made out of plants. The flight will take an hour and for its evenemental value, it will fly low above the Netherlands.

Green architecture at Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s university campus has inaugurated a building that proves that it is possible to diminish CO2, simply by its architectural conception.

The buiding industry is responsable for almost 25% of all hot house gases, and it is one of the domains spilling much unneccessary energy. Because of the Copenhagen top about climate change, the local university has attempted to prove that it is possible to reduce CO2 with relatively simple techniques. The Green Lighthouse has been realised by Christensen & CO Arketekter and it is Denmark’s first building with neutral CO2 emissions. The entire building has been conceived as to reduce CO2 emissions : the construction makes use of natural light through large spaces and transparant walls. Its cilindric conception with regulable facades permits optimal rentability of sunlight, but also avoiding light in case of excessive heat. The architectural design by itself permits reducing 75% of supplementary energy.

This building will be a witness at the Copenhagen conference, in order to prove that its is possible to build green buildings, and by extension, to do green urbanism. All this without necessarily making use of modern technology, often complex and expensive, but simply by rethinking its design, orientation and interior design.
